How to Track Goal Completions for SaaS
Your app has 5,000 registered users. But how many actually use it? How many upgraded to paid? How many invited their team? Goal completions track all these actions. They show you whether users are finding value or just signing up and leaving.
Why Goal Completions Matter for SaaS
Track activation. A signup is just the beginning. Users who complete onboarding or use a key feature are more likely to stay. Track “First Feature Use” as a goal to measure activation.
Measure trial conversion. If you offer a free trial, track “Trial Started” and “Trial Converted” as separate goals. See conversion rates and optimize your trial experience.
Understand feature adoption. Which features drive upgrades? Track feature usage as goals. If users who use Feature X convert at higher rates, promote it more.
Monitor retention. Track “Login” as a weekly goal. Declining logins signal churn risk. Catch it early with goal tracking.
How to Check in GA4
In GA4, go to Configure > Events. Create custom events for your SaaS:
- trial_signup: User starts a free trial
- first_login: User logs in for the first time
- feature_used: User uses a key feature (create for each major feature)
- upgrade: User converts to paid plan
- invite_sent: User invites a teammate
- login: User logs in (track weekly)
Mark these as conversions in the Events table. Then go to Reports > Engagement > Conversions to see performance.
Build an exploration report to analyze funnels:
- Signup → First Login
- First Login → First Feature Use
- First Feature Use → Upgrade
This shows your activation and conversion paths.
The Easier Way
ClawAnalytics simplifies SaaS goal tracking into actionable insights.
Example questions ClawAnalytics answers instantly:
- “What is our trial-to-paid conversion rate?” Track trial starts vs upgrades.
- “Which features lead to upgrades?” Compare feature usage between free and paid users.
- “Are users becoming more active?” Track goal completion trends over time.
ClawAnalytics connects to your GA4 and presents clear activation metrics. You focus on improving conversion, not navigating reports.
Quick Wins
Start with core SaaS goals. Track Signup, First Login, and Upgrade at minimum. These give you baseline metrics.
Create activation goals. Define what “activation” means for your product. Usually it is using a key feature within the first session. Track it.
Track feature-level goals. Create a goal for each major feature. See adoption rates and identify unused features to improve or promote.
Set up cohort analysis. In GA4, create cohorts based on goal completions. Compare retention between users who completed activation goals vs those who did not.
